Press release -

Mandhana century takes India to series-opening victory

India Women 210-5 beat England Women 113 by 97 runs

Smriti Mandhana blasted her way to her first IT20 hundred to help India Women comfortably win the 1st Vitality IT20 at Trent Bridge and go 1-0 up in the series.

After being asked to bat first by Nat Sciver-Brunt, Mandhana and fellow opener Shafali Verma set about storming their way to a big total in the Nottingham sun.

The pair raced to 77 before they were separated - Verma picking out mid-off Sophie Ecclestone off Em Arlott - but the addition of No.3 Harleen Deol only saw the run-rate accelerate further.

England's bowlers stuck to their task but India's batters were rarely threatened, with only Lauren Bell offering much in the way of control. Mandhana brought up her maiden IT20 century in the 16th over and India's total at the interval, their second-highest in IT20 cricket, seemed formidable.

In reply, only Sciver-Brunt ever got going, making 66 from 41 balls as wickets fell around her. It was India's spinners who did much of the damage, sharing eight wickets between them, with four on debut for Shree Charani.

It signalled the first defeat for both Charlotte Edwards and Nat Sciver-Brunt, with the two teams back at it in Bristol on Tuesday.
